Perchè Mozilla Firefox è il miglior browser per internet: il valore dell'Open Source.
Mi chiama un amico.
Per l'ennesima volta qualche sito malevolo gli ha fatto impazzire Internet Explorer e ad ogni apertura del browser si ritrova 3 o 4 finestre di popup. Controllo il registro, ma sembra tutto a posto. Avviamo una scansione con l'ottimo Microsoft Antispyware, ma non trova nulla.
"Mi informo" - gli dico - "nel frattempo ti installo il Browser che uso io, e che è molto più sicuro".
Dopo qualche giorno di navigazione sui newsgroup trovo la causa del suo problema. Lo chiamo.
"Ci vediamo? Forse ho risolto il problema dei tuoi popup!"
"Non è il caso" - mi risponde - "Firefox è molto meglio di IE e oramai mi sono abituato alla navigazione multipla (intende il tabbed browsing) e l'ho messo predefinito. Internet Explorer non lo uso più".
Queste parole non suoneranno aliene a molti. Chi prova Firefox, difficilmente torna indietro. Io l'ho installato a tutta quella categoria di amici che ha un casino nuovo ogni settimana e i problemi si sono dimezzati.
I suoi numeri parlano chiaro: oltre 60 milioni di persone nel mondo hanno scelto Mozilla Firefox per navigare in rete, e questo numero aumenta ogni giorno.
Inspiegabilmente dopo aver ottenuto il monopolio dei programmi per la navigazione su internet con un prodotto, per i tempi, ottimo (IE 4.0) Microsoft ha smesso di aggiornare in maniera significativa il suo browser facendo si che molte alternative si affacciassero sul mercato: Mozilla con la sua suite e con Firefox, Opera e molti derivati da Gecko (il motore di mozilla) e Internet Explorer (il nuovo Netscape 8 li incorpora entrambi).
Si dice spesso che Mozilla Firefox sia pratico, con la sua navigazione a schede, e veloce (sia con l'ADSL che con la tradizionale linea 56k) e questo lo potete giudicare anche voi scaricandolo.
Ma è importante capire perchè è diffusa la credenza che Firefox sia anche mediamente più sicuro di tutti gli altri browser.
Questa sicurezza è intrinseca nel modello OPEN SOURCE sul quale Firefox si basa. Open Source vuol dire che il codice sorgente del software è liberamente disponibile e scaricabile per consultazione o modifiche. Al contrario il codice sorgente dei browser commerciali come Internet Explorer e Opera è gelosamente custodito, e nessuno può dargli una sbirciatina, neppure per sopperire ad un difetto.
Quando uno sviluppatore o un utente avanzato trova una vulnerabilità in un programma commerciale (come il poter modificare la pagina iniziale senza che l'utente se ne accorga come è successo al mio amico) l'unica arma che ha a disposizione è segnalare il problema al produttore che si farà carico di correggere il codice e distribuire patch e aggiornamenti. Purtroppo questo, almeno nel caso Microsoft avviene con lentezza spesso esasperante, anche a fronte di problemi piuttosto seri.
Se invece si riesce a scovare un baco in un software open source e se ne ha la capacità, si può scaricare il codice e trovare da soli la porzione errata, correggerla e in pieno spirito della comunità del software libero, condividere il risultato con tutti gli altri utenti del programma.
DBlog, il software che alimenta il mio Court of Misanthropy è open source e tante volte ho riscontrato problemini risolti in poche modifiche al codice con il supporto della comunità degli altri utenti (prova Dblog Open Source è gratis!) .
Anche se non si conosce la programmazione è comunque molto facile trovare qualcuno che sia disposto ad ascoltare il problema e a dare una mano con la soluzione.
Per l'utente normale questo significa che Firefox è aggiornato molto spesso diventando sempre più sicuro e veloce.
Se come me al mattino sfogliate gli articoli di qualche testata online provate la comodità del tabbed browsing. Dalla pagina principale scegliete i link degli articoli che vi interessano premendo la rotellina del mouse invece che il tasto sinistro. Si aprirà una nuova scheda in background senza aprire altre finestre e nel tempo che avrete cliccato su tutti i link che vi interessano le pagine relative saranno già tutte caricate.
Inoltre Mozilla Firefox è un programmino di circa 5 megabyte, si scarica in poco tempo, non fa pasticci con il sistema operativo, non disturba assolutamente Internet Explorer, ed è facile da configurare. Se decidete che proprio non fa per voi (permettetemi un sorrisetto dubbioso) potrete rimuoverlo con pochi click dal pannello di controllo e tutto torna come prima, senza lasciare traccia.
