Molto meglio allora un gioco dove ci si confronta con alleati ed avversari umani, con tutti i loro pregi e difetti, dove un amico può essere veramente sincero o tradirti e pugnalarti alle spalle, ma senza seguire uno script deterministico.
I giochi di ruolo online piacciono moltissimo alle case produttrici perchè sono spesso legati ad un abbonamento mensile da pagare per tutto il tempo che si vuole giocare, e nonostante le infrastrutture come i server e la connetività siano un investimento non indifferente, se il gioco ha un seppur minimo successo, il ritorno dell'investimento in questione è pressochè assicurato.
L'evoluzione tecnica sembra non aver trascurato neppure i GDR online, e per poter giocare con uno di questi giochi è necessario un computer potente con molta memoria, una scheda video di ultima generazione ed un accesso ad internet a banda larga.
E chi vorrebbe solo provare questo tipo di esperienza?
Può giocare a RuneScape, il gioco di ruolo online della Jagex, in multiplayer di massa, gratuito, e che richiede solo un browser web e java e un pc da poche centinaia di MegaHertz.
Non vi è nulla da installare, basta puntare il browser su www.runescape.com, registrarsi ed immergersi in un mondo fantasy tridimensionale, semplice ma curato ed efficace, nel quale è possibile combattere, lanciare magie, risolvere misteri, vendere e comprare oggetti ma anche cucinare, diventare fabbro o minatore, pescatore, artigiano e molto altro.
Chiunque abbia mai programmato un'applet java (il gioco usa questa tecnologia) si rende subito conto di trovarsi davanti ad un piccolo miracolo, e seppur la grafica e la storia non sono a livello dei giochi più blasonati, avventurarsi in questo mondo è comunque un'esperienza molto divertente.
L'accesso è istantaneo, se si rimane inattivi il gioco si disconnette automaticamente, e ad un successivo login è possibile ritornare in azione là dove si era interrotta, senza bisogno di salvataggi. In effetti è così facile che spesso viene usato come alternativa alla chat più tradizionale, grazie anche alla possibilità di usare "emoticons corporali" e di personalizzare l'aspetto dell'avatar con molta cura.
