La Prima Guerra Mondiale è stata notevole sotto molti punti di vista, principalmente sotto il profilo scientifico e tecnologico.
Questo conflitto è stato il primo nella storia ad essere accompagnato nel suo svolgimento da un progresso della medicina tale da permettere un tasso di sopravvivenza tra i feriti gravi inimmaginabile solo pochi decenni prima.
Ciò ha però creato un nuovo tipo di problema, meno presente nei precedenti conflitti: la medicina e la chirurgia potevano salvare la vita a moltissimi soldati, ma spesso queste persone tornavano in patria mutilate o sfigurate, diventando vere e proprie incarnazioni viventi degli orrori della guerra e ponendo serie questioni riguardanti la loro integrazione e ritorno ad una vita normale.
L'impatto culturale e sociale di questa nuova realtà fu devastante. Secondo l'ottimo documentario Universal Horror, narrante la storia del periodo d'oro dei film horror della Universal, tutta l'ondata di pellicole di questo genere a cavallo delle due Guerre, spesso di notevole valore artistico, fu influenzato in maniera inconscia proprio dallo sconvolgente ritorno dei veterani. In effetti é innegabile la somiglianza fra alcuni personaggi, soprattutto quelli interpretati da Lon Chaney Senior e alcune foto dei reduci feriti al fronte.
Un viso deturpato nel compimento del proprio dovere non rende una persona un mostro, tuttavia può rendere difficilissima la vita sia dal punto di vista funzionale che sociale.
è in questo contesto che nasce la chirurgia plastica ricostruttiva, principalmente ad opera del chirurgo inglese Sir Harold Gillies che introduce una serie di avanzatissime tecniche e procedure, studiate ancora oggi, proprio per la ricostruzione del viso dei feriti e degli ustionati, in grado in molti casi di ottenere veri e propri miracoli.
Una nuova speranza viene data a queste persone, il loro destino viene risollevato nel corpo e nello spirito. Il cugino di Gilles, Archibald McIndoe si unisce al team negli anni '30 e continuerà questo lavoro anche nella II Guerra Mondiale, fondando anche il famoso Guinea Pig Club, un vero e proprio Gentlemen's Club per i convalescenti.

Tutto ciò dovrebbe rendere l'idea di quanto fondamentale per molte persone e per la storia della medicina sia stato il lavoro di questi pionieri, un lavoro che meriterebbe una maggior notorietà anche fra il grande pubblico, oramai abituato ad associare la chirurgia plastica con seni rifatti e volti rugosi stirati.
è per questo che l'artista Paddy Hartley in collaborazione con i dottori Bamji e Thompson ha creato Project Facade (link), una serie di opere d'arte che ripercorrono la storia degli uomini che da medici o pazienti hanno attraversato questo importante e drammatico periodo storico.
Le opere sono delicate ed originali: su dei manichini viene posta una riproduzione della divisa della persona (ogni opera porta il nome del paziente che l'ha ispirata) al momento del ferimento. Sul volto del manichino è poi inserito un cappuccio, simile ad un passamontagna, sul quale vengono riprodotte le menomazioni subite e le tecniche chirurgiche applicate, quasi come fosse un modello anatomico sui generis.
Sul petto della divisa sono infine applicate foto dei vari stadi della guarigione o in alcuni casi, altre ricostruzioni di stoffa dei procedimenti utilizzati.
L'esposizione, ancora da completare, sarà visibile in Inghilterra ed in un tour internazionale. Personalmente dato il valore storico, didattico ed umano del progetto mi auguro che questa iniziativa possa superare abbondantemente i confini nazionali e trovare l'ampio riscontro che indubbiamente merita.
