L’Ultimo Uomo sulla Terra, ovvero “Io sono Leggenda” con Vincent Price è in pubblico dominio!
The Last Man on Earth è il primo e (secondo me) più riuscito adattamento cinematografico del romanzo di Richard Matheson "Io sono Leggenda".
La sua storia è molto curiosa, doveva essere un film Hammer, ma per una serie di peripezie finì nelle mani di Robert Lippert che decise di girarlo in Italia.
Già, The Last Man on Earth è un film molto italiano, girato a Roma nel 1964 con il titolo di "L'ultimo uomo sulla terra".
Il protagonista, che qui si chiama Robert Morgan invece che Robert Neville è un superbo Vincent Price, mentre la regia è di Ubaldo Ragona e Sidney Salkow.
Avevo promesso di non tornare più sull'argomento "Io sono leggenda", ma la scoperta è troppo ghiotta per essere ignorata.
La versione in inglese della pellicola è in pubblico dominio: è possibile scaricarla da Internet Archive completamente gratis, copiarla, duplicarla: volendo anche venderla.
Come è consuetudine dell'Archivio i formati disponibili sono molteplici: dallo streaming per connessioni dial-up, fino al grosso file Mpeg2 da oltre due gigabyte dal quale trarre un bel DVD da vedere, rivedere e conservare.
Come forse avevate intuito dal mio assioma 
amo molto questo film, che seppur non perfetto e non perfettamente aderente al romanzo, ne trasmette davvero l'atmosfera.
La sceneggiatura è stata scritta da Matheson in persona. Poi ha cambiato idea e ha preferito farsi chiamare con il nome di Logan Swanson perché non era soddisfatto, ma comunque si è fregato non le sue mani e non è stato uno scempio di terzi (a me il risultato sembra buono...)
Nonostante sia un attore di genere, le doti di Price sono universalmente riconosciute: è un attore raffinato, colto ed estremamente elegante e in questo film, nel quale spesso è solo con i suoi pensieri, non fa assolutamente eccezione.
Mi permetto di consigliare, a chi volesse esplorare ancora la filmografia di Price, una pellicole curiosa: I maghi del Terrore (The Raven), di Roger Corman, che nonostante il titolo è una commedia a sfondo fantasy-horror, scritta anch'essa da Richard Matheson ed incentrata sulla rivalità tra bizzarri stregoni.
Il cast è da non credere per un amante del genere, tanto da essere stato denominato "Il Triumvirato dell'Orrore": oltre a Vincent Price gli altri due stregoni sono gli indimenticabili Boris Karloff e Peter Lorre. Fatico a ricordare altre loro partecipazioni in un film brillante. Ha una parte persino un giovanissimo Jack Nicholson!
Tornando a The Last Man on Earth, potreste chiedervi se anche la versione in italiano sia quindi di pubblico dominio. Non conosco il caso specifico, ma la risposta è probabilmente NO, in quanto la traccia doppiata gode di diritti separati, come se fosse un'opera a sé stante.

L’ho scoperto qualche giorno fa, ma pensavo che in quanto grande fan del libro tu ne fossi già a conoscenza ^_^
In ogni caso dopo il tuo post di qualche giorno fa mi sono deciso a leggere il libro (anche se avevo già visto il film con Will Smith) e devo dire che mi ha stupito.
La trama del film è solo una fievole ombra di quello che è veramente il libro: un’opera veramente notevole e ben scritta, inquietante fino all’ultimo.

Andrea, vedrai che scorre via veloce come il vento! Anche il genere è difficile da definire, non è proprio un horror, non è proprio fantascienza, non è proprio un romanzo catrastofista… di certo è un libro da giudicare solo dopo l’ultimissima riga…
Jack, conoscevo il film che avevo visto più volte in italiano (c’era un periodo che passava spesso a tarda notte su rai3) ma non sapevo che fosse PD!
