WiFi USB per Linux: Amici Taiwanesi, apprezziamo lo sforzo!
Come forse avete notato, e come è comune a molti liguri, ho una certa predisposizione al mugugno.
Ed uno degli argomenti preferiti, già affrontato anche su TA, è l'assenza di indicazioni sul supporto linux sulle confezioni dei prodotti informatici, anche quando sono perfettamente compatibili.
Girando per il MARC di primavera, l'amico Roberto Odino, che ha una sorta di sesto senso per i buoni affari, mi ha fatto notare questo prodotto, che al contrario di molti concorrenti vantava sulla scatola il supporto a diverse distribuzioni di Linux:
La schedina è stata montata su Ubuntu 8.04 (mio) per provarla, è stata riconosciuta all'istante e si è messa subito a cercare gli Access Point nelle vicinanze.
La penna Usb WiFi era un regalo per un amico, montata sul suo Ubuntu 7.10 è stata nuovamente riconosciuta automaticamente e ha agganciato istantaneamente l' HAG wireless di fastweb.
Messa un poco sotto pressione però tutto si è bloccato, l'indicatore dava segnale, ma la spia sulla penna si è spenta. Problema non direttamente imputabile alla penna, è bastato disabilitare il supporto IPV6 di Gutsy per tornare a far funzionare tutto alla perfezione (WPA): navigazione, streaming e p2p.
Il segnale ricevuto è forte e costante, molto più presente che con la Netgear WG111v3 installata su Windows, e sembra essere particolarmente insensibile all'apertura e chiusura delle porte delle stanze e alle persone davanti al computer, che portano una degradazione massima dell 1%.
Credo che molte aziende dovrebbero seguire l'esempio di Edimax, anche se a leggere bene la scatola si nota una divertente distrazione:
