Alla ricerca di un Linux-PC? Attenzione all’intel GMA X4500!
So bene quanto è difficile, ma nel contempo esaltante, la ricerca di un PC ideale per l'amato pinguino.
Da queste parti si è sempre parlato di Intel levandosi il cappello, soprattutto per quanto riguarda le schede video integrate, ma in generale per il suo coinvolgimento attivo nel mondo dell'open source, come ben sa chi ascolta gli interventi registrati ad Ubuntu Live, su IT Conversations.
Proprio in questi giorni mi è arrivato un volantino in cassetta con le offerte di una catena della grande distribuzione e ho notato che, principalmente sui computer portatili, cominciano ad essere presenti esemplari dotati di acceleratore video Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500, destinato in futuro a soppiantare il collaudato X3100.
Proprio lo stesso giorno avevo letto su Phoronix, sito di riferimento per l'hardware su Linux, la recensione di una motherboard basata su chipset Intel G43, che integra questo acceleratore.
L'articolo più che una recensione, sembra un bollettino di guerra:
The motherboard exhibited no compatibility problems with Ubuntu 8.10 and the Linux 2.6.27 kernel. With using the LM_Sensors w83627dhg-isa-0290 we also had reliable readouts on the CPU voltage, +3.33V, +12.00V, case fans, system temperature, and CPU temperatures. When it came time to test the G43 X4500 graphics though, it wasn't exactly pleasurable. We had tested out the Intel GMA X4500HD back in July with the Super Micro C2SEA and it had worked out quite well. However, the open-source Intel graphics driver is currently going through some major renovations.
For months now they have been working on the Graphics Execution Manager for their memory management needs along with kernel mode-setting and other major components. This invasive work has caused a few regressions and other issues. With Ubuntu 8.10 and the Intel GMA X4500 found on the ASRock motherboard, the performance was terrible and the system would lock-up in games like Nexuiz. After these problems using the Intel 2.4 driver, we decided to try Fedora 10 Snapshot 3 since it ships with the newest Intel 2.5 driver and has integrated the latest GEM bits and other X.Org changes. When it came time to starting the X Server on this motherboard with the Intel X4500 graphics, we would experience a segmentation fault due to memory issues. The GMA X4500HD though hadn't generated a segmentation fault when using the same configuration.
Reverting back to Ubuntu, we then built the xf86-video-intel, Mesa, and DRM from git source, but still there were serious performance issues. The ASRock G43Twins-FullHD isn't to be blamed but it's squarely Intel with the major changes they have going on right now within their Linux driver.

) . Ripartizionato C: (IDE NTFS) , riservati 30 giga a U810, masterizzato il CD…Avviato… Cavolo! Si inchioda sempre allo stesso punto su “Starting Hardware Drivers… [Fail] senza dire null’altro. Provata la “modalità sicura”, e senza driver proprietari.. niente..!! Alla fine ho rimesso Wubi (che con lo stesso hardware funziona alla grande con Compiz) con 20 Giga (il massimo). Tutto più veloce di prima con Virtualbox, i virtualbox add
2 giorni di stress. Volevo un Ubuntu Intrepid “Tecnica Arcana Edition” installato completamente su Ext3, invece che sotto il MERAVIGLIOSO wubi. Premetto che funzionava TUTTO, avevo solo finito i 10 Giga di spazio previsti per il test e volevo mettere Virtualbox e XP come “plugin finale” (Fino a quando si passa del tutto da XP a Linux non si prova quest’ultimo al 100% e ho deciso di adottare al 90% Intrepid

[continua] …virtualbox + additions ed XP a tutto schermo! Installato da un ISO in 15 MINUTI. Per l’installazione “reale” aspetterò il prossimo PC, ma sono scocciato..(il cd l’ho verificato) Possibile ancora non possiamo contare su di un setup sicuro?? Spero solo che riguardi il solo mio hardware!

@ Non ho mai avuto problemi con l’installazione su disco e non ti saprei dire perché con Wubi funziona, ma sembra un semplice timeout nell’assegnazione della modalità del dma, se il driver non riesce nell’operazione attende il timeout e poi va in PIO. A volte ci può volere anche 5 min ma poi parte. Solitamente si risolve con una linea di comando da aggiungere al kernel una volta trovata la causa.
Ma scusa tre post fa era tutto rose e fiori e ora ti scocci per un problemuccio del genere?
Ora capisci perché prima di recensire una nuova release attendo almeno due settimane di uso esclusivo?

Beh, una cosa simile (senza nessun chiarimento, magari anche solo il testo che hai scritto) non è esattamente cosa s’aspetta che viene da windows. Anche se sono sicuro che non è un problema generalizzato. Però, anche se Wubi fa accapponare la pelle ai sistemisti veri, è stabile, veloce ed affidabile, sarà un workaround ma, se funziona così bene, tanto di cappello! Sull’altro PC più vecchio u810 si carica perfettamente con lo stesso CD, ma la grafica 3D non è supportata (il mio è un museo storico, sai? Non butto via niente come il maiale
) Intrepid è eccezionale, non ho mutato la mia convinzione per colpa di un timeout… anche se mi scoccia che ci sia

Ottima notizia: Ubuntu 8.10 non ha nessun problema con la mia configurazione. Con un lettore DVD esterno il CD si carica perfettamente. Finora quindi, per quanto mi riguarda, nessun problema con lo Stambecco Intrepido (e ci sono continui aggiornamenti ai componenti da migliorare dalla Canonical). Ora provo ad abilitare il tuo “scroll a 2 dita”

oddio! non avevo letto di questa cosa, forse pero’ ubuntu 9.04 da cui scrivo ha risolto. ho preso il pc nuovo ieri 19/6/2009 e sempre ieri ho installato ubuntu 9.04. per ora va e anche bene. e’ veloce (il paragone fa ridere perche’ vengo da una scheda grafica di 10 anni fa). si freezza “solo” google earth quando lo stresso facendo dei zoom repentini
ma pare che debba fare qualcosa sul bios (verificare/settare AGP 4X)
tanto dura poco perche’ provero’ fedora 11 64bit
